In ancient Rome, garum ibericum, a salty paste, was manufactured with a brew of salt, fish and herbs and used throughout the Roman Empire as a sauce to season all kinds of dishes. The Portuguese Atlantic coast has been renowned for its highest quality sea salt for quite a while.
